Basic Computer Tips
Computers are everywhere and used for nearly everything, even by people who grew up in a time where the idea of computers seemed like science fiction. Computers today are built to be user-friendly and to last for years, as long as you understand the basics of taking care of them. There are basic tips that will help you get more enjoyment and productivity from your computer.
Setting up a New Computer
1. Follow the setup guide when you get a new computer. When you are prompted to make a backup disc that will allow you to boot your computer in case of an emergency, do it right then. You can opt out of making a backup disc if you're in a hurry. You may not think you need one, and you may never need to use it, but make one. You will thank yourself if you ever have a problem booting up your computer.
You will also want to clean up your computer. Computer manufacturers load a lot of unnecessary free or trial software onto their computers to make you think you are getting a lot for your money. You won't need or want most of it. Decide what you want to do with your computer, then go to the "Control Panel" and uninstall any software that doesn't fit into your plans to use the computer. This will free up disc space and remove a lot of clutter from the "Start" menu. If you are unsure about any program, don't uninstall it without speaking with the manufacturer of your computer.
Install security or antivirus software on your computer. Most new computers come with a subscription trial of one of these programs. Keep in mind the trial will only last 6 months to a year, then you will have to pay the software marketer for the updates, or the software will become outdated and your protection will decrease. If you don't want to use the antivirus software that comes with your computer, purchase another product, uninstall what came with the computer, and install your new antivirus software.
Installing and Uninstalling Software
2. Be careful when you install software. It is relatively easy these days to install software. So easy, in fact, that many people do it without giving it much thought. Some factors to consider before you install a software package include making sure the software doesn't include spyware or add its own toolbars to your browser, making sure you acquired the software from a reputable source, and ensuring the software is legal and not pirated, which will allow you to keep the software up to date.
When you uninstall a software package, always opt to use the software's uninstall option if one is available. You will typically find an uninstall option in the program group where the software is located. Your second option for uninstalling is to use your computer's list of program files to uninstall. Never go into the program's folder and just delete the folder. This doesn't uninstall the software, though it may prevent your computer from starting up later. Always uninstall with an uninstaller.
Keeping Your Machine Clean and Secure
3. In addition to the antivirus software you choose, you may want to add additional programs that are helpful in maintaining your computer and keeping it running more quickly. Crap Cleaner is one of the best, easiest to install of these programs, and it's free. This handy little software will clean your registry, help you uninstall unnecessary software, clean temp files from Internet use, and detect and fix registry errors. This is highly recommended, and can save you a lot of headaches if you run it once a week. It installs quickly and easily, and allows you to update regularly. Spybot Search and Destroy is also free and worth the download.
Consider keeping drinks away from your computer, especially if you're using a laptop. Regardless of how careful you are, it only takes a single accident to knock a drink over, and liquid is not a computer's friend. If it gets inside the computer, there's a good chance your computer will be ruined.
