The death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider at Indianapolis Motor Speedway cast a shadow over Sunday's races at the historic track and prompted mourning competitors to defend the development system for the dangerous circuit.

Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., fell off his bike during the warmup lap for the day's first race at Indianapolis and was run over by another motorcycle, driven by a 12-year-old. Medical workers immediately placed Lenz in a neck brace, put him on a stretcher and began chest compressions while taking him to a hospital.

Several hours later, he was pronounced dead.

The Marion County coroner's office said Lenz died from blunt force trauma. More details could be released Monday following an autopsy on the youngest driver or rider ever killed at the 101-year-old speedway.

"Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider," read a posting on Lenz's Facebook page, which was signed "Dad."

"He passed doing what he loved and had his go fast face on as he pulled onto the track," the posting said. "The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. 45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo."

Lenz rode the No. 45 bike, and his father was at the track Sunday.

Nendhra Pazham Pachadi (Ripe Plantain Pachadi)

Last Year, I had posted the recipe for Pineapple Pachadi. Pachadi and Kichadi are two popular Malayali Sadhya dishes and they are often confused with each other as both are very similar. Pachadi/Kichadi can be made using either fruits or vegetables. Curd or Yogurt is often used for sourness but some people use Tamarind. If raw mangoes are used, then both Curd and Tamarind are not required. Sometimes, sugar or jaggery is added to make the dish sweet.

Ripe Plantain (Nenthra Pazham) Pachadi

• In some regions of Kerala, if vegetables are used for making this dish, then it is known as Kichadi and if fruits are used, it is called Pachadi.
• Others classify it according to the usage of ground Mustard Seeds. If mustard seeds are ground and added to the dish, then it is known as Pachadi. If ground Mustard seeds are not used, it is called Kichadi.
• When fruits are used, the Pachadi will be sweet and is known as Madhura Pachadi. If curd is used, it is called Thayiru Pachadi and if tamarind is used for sourness, it is known as Puli Pachadi. So many different ways of classifying Pachadi and Kichadi. I am sure all of you have become even more confused.

Ingredients

1. Boneless & Skinless Chicken – 1 lb
2. Potato – 1 big
3. Finely Minced Onions – 1 medium (You can use a food processor or food chopper)
4. Finely Chopped Green Chillies – 2 or 3
5. Finely Minced Ginger – 1 tbsp
6. Finely Minced Garlic – 3 cloves
7. Curry Leaves (finely shredded) – A few (optional)
8. Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
9. Red Chilly Powder – 1/2 tsp (Alter according to your spice tolerance)
10. Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
11. Garam Masala Powder – 1/2 to 1 tsp
12. Chicken Masala Powder – 1 tbsp (Optional – I used store bought Eastern Fish Masala brand)
13. Oil – 2 tbsp
14. Bread Crumbs – 1/2 cup approx
15. Egg – 1
16. Oil for frying – As needed
17. Salt – to taste
18. Water – as required

Set Out on a Tour of the Universe on Your Computer Screen

In an exciting development, students from Pune can now set out on a virtual astronomy tour thanks to Alyssa Goodman, a renowned astronomer from Harvard. The tour will show and explain how dust in the Milky Way Galaxy concentrates to form planets and stars. With the help of a novel technology called the World Wide Telescope (WWT) a computer screen can now be turned into a virtual telescope which can show the entire universe with minute details. As far as the vocal part is concerned, a user can select his/ her preferred language for the explanation.
The Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is hosting a workshop in Pune on the WWT technology in association with Microsoft Research. The workshop will be organized on September 4 in which astronomy enthusiasts will get useful information about the WWT and its usage.

Mr. Arvind Paranjpye who is one of the scientific officers working in the Public Outreach Programme of the ICUAA was talking to the correspondents on Friday. He said, “When astronomers look at the sky through a telescope, some images are taken, for instance, to study a planet. However, this frame may contain various other things besides the planet. For the scientists, the planet could be important, but for others, there could be things besides the planet in the frame that are important. In the WWT, many such images have been stored in such a manner that users can extract extra information from them.” The WWT is a user friendly technology specially designed to enhance user's virtual experience. This will help the user in astronomical research and science education. Moreover its entertainment value too is indisputable.
