Dial Up Vs. High Speed for Internet

Dial Up Vs. High Speed for Internet

When it comes to surfing the internet, a high speed connection is the way to go. Whether you choose a DSL connection or a cable internet line, the difference, when compared to dial-up speed, is considerable.

    Dial-Up Speeds

1.      Dial-up connections typically run at a speed of 56k, or 56 kilobits per second. However, the FCC has passed a regulation in the United States that limits this even further to 53k.

    DSL Speeds

2.      DSL speeds are typically between 768k and 1.5 Mbps (megabits per second), though some reach speeds as high as 7 Mbps.

    Cable Modem Speeds

3.      Cable internet speeds are commonly between 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps, though speeds of 16 Mbps and even higher are not unheard of.

    Multitasking

4.      With a dial-up connection, you cannot talk on the phone and surf the internet at the same time unless you have a second phone line; with DSL and cable internet connections, a second line is not necessary.

Time Required To Browse The Internet

5.      A dial-up connection may take several minutes to load an e-mail or a webpage, compared to several seconds on a DSL or cable connection.
