How to Safely Force Restart Your Mac

Sometimes your macintosh takes forever to restart, because you have lots of programs open, or it's CPU is very busy. This article will let you know how to restart it without having to use the power button.

Have you ever tried to restart your Mac, and after waiting seemingly forever, gotten the message "Logout has timed out because the application failed to quit"? Here's one way to reboot your computer safely. First, be sure that you have saved your work in any open applications!
2. Step 2

Now, open up the Mac OS X Terminal. To do this, go to the Finder, and in the Applications Folder, open the Utilities folder. Scroll down to Terminal, and double-click it to open.
3. Step 3

Once the terminal has opened, simply type the command
sudo reboot
and press return. It will prompt you for your password. Enter it, and press the return key. Once you have, your computer should reboot within about 5-10 seconds.
