The prospect of his kicker facing a 46-yard field goal tie the game in overtime was enough to convince Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio to take a monumental gamble.
Instead of having Don Conroy kick Dantonio called for a fake field goal on 4th-and-13 from the Notre Dame 29. The plays known as "Little Giants" has holder Aaron Bates, former high school quarterback, look to hit Le'Veon Bell.
But the Irish were not fooled on the play and Bell was covered. But Bates waited until tight end Charles Grantt broke free and hit him with a game-winning touchdown pass.
"We always name our trick plays after movies. We keep it fun. ... We actually put it in on Wednesday. It worked every time," Dantonio said. "I made the call, 'Little Giants,' and I said a little prayer."
It was second consecutive last-second loss for Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and spoiled a night where quarterback Dayne Crist threw for four touchdowns.
"A difficult loss, obviously," Kelly said. "It came down to one play. Michigan State executed the play, and we did not. We had a guy covering who fell down."
There was some controversy about the play. Images before the snap indicate the play clock expired and Michigan State should have been assessed a 5-yard penalty.
Kelly was asked about the play clock after the game.
"Did not see it," Kelly said. "Did not see the play clock at that point. Don't think there's any instant replay after the fact."
